Actor Akira Nakao has fans from all generations – from the young to the elderly. The key to his popularity is his unique and extraordinary aura. In addition to his tried-and-tested acting ability, Nakao is also well known for his ability to entertain people with the power of his personality. And, yet there is another aspect of Nakao's talents that must not be forgotten: He is an accomplished artist.
Having studied at Musashino Art University and also in Paris, Nakao owns a ceramics studio in Kyushu and also ateliers in Chiba Prefecture and Okinawa, where he continues his diverse practice in ceramics, calligraphy, painting and more. Nakao's works have garnered acclaim for their originality, and an understanding of Nakao the man would not be complete without an appreciation of his art. Another, little-known aspect of Nakao’s activities is that he is an avid collector of art. He is a dedicated collector of paintings by Kokuta Suda, and he even possesses an important work by Impressionist Pierre Auguste Renoir. Nakao’s works of self expression are bold in style and possess a freshness and freedom that is a joy to behold.
Nakao will be joined on stage by his wife, Shino Ikenami, who not only had for a father Kingentei Basho, the renowned rakugo comedian, and for a grandfather the great rakugo comedian Kokontei Shinsho, but is also a painter of beautiful Nihon-ga herself.
This artist and art-lover couple have kindly agreed to reveal the full extent of their varied talents through this lecture and exhibition. We hope you will be able to join us.
