SHIKISAISHA

SHIKISAISHA Gallery is pleased to present KIRAKIRA, the first solo exhibition by Natsuko Yamazaki.

Graduating from the Department of Oil Painting at Tokyo University of the Arts in 2006, Yamazaki believes that the essence of art lies in the ineffable “something” that resides within great works — a quality that cannot be fully articulated but deeply felt. Through her practice, she seeks to give form to unseen emotions and fragments of memory.

Using alkyd resin and glitter — materials often associated with accessories — Yamazaki creates semi-relief surfaces that emphasize the interplay of light and texture. Her works shimmer vividly, changing their expression depending on the viewer’s angle and the surrounding space, radiating a distinctive and luminous presence.

The title KIRAKIRA embodies the artist’s desire to sublimate invisible emotions and memories into the brilliance of light, reflecting her fundamental gaze toward the world.

This exhibition will feature approximately 15 new works in various sizes. We invite you to experience the rich and emotional world where light and feeling intertwine.

Artist Statement

To give shape to something invisible — that, for me, is the very reason I paint. Many of the emotions and fragments of memory I encounter in daily life resist verbal expression. When I am able to sublimate them through material and motif, I feel that I have touched the true joy of artistic creation.

I also believe that one of the artist’s social roles is to make the world a richer place. Stepping into new territory can be a solitary and courageous act, but each step forward opens a world that may bring happiness and hope to others. Art, to me, is a precious human act — one that illuminates the deepest parts of the heart.
