Launched in 2019, the Japanese Art Auction MEGURU specializes in Japanese art, ranging from Edo-period works to modern Japanese paintings, as well as Western-style paintings, calligraphy, prints, and crafts. The auction has introduced carefully selected works from across Japan to art enthusiasts both domestically and internationally, and has grown into one of the leading Japanese art auctions in the country.

 
This 26th auction will feature a wide range of works from various genres by leading Japanese artists. The lineup is designed to help even first-time auction attendees and those new to art purchases to find their favorite piece. This time, we will be offering works by artists who have garnered attention at exhibitions in Tokyo museums, such as Nagasawa Rosetsu and Shimomura Kanzan, as well as many other impressive pieces including Utagawa Kuniyoshi's "He looks scary, but he's actually a really nice person," Yokoyama Taikan's "Cuckoo," Umehara Ryuzaburo's "Peony," and Munakata Shiko's "Horned Owl." Furthermore, the special feature will focus on Kawanabe Kyosai, an artist who was active from the late Edo period to the Meiji era.

Special Feature: Kawanabe Kyosai

Kawanabe Kyosai was an artist who was active from the late Edo period to the Meiji era. While based on the traditional painting techniques of the Kano school, he built his own unique world of painting with his exceptional brushwork and unconventional ideas. His high level of skill and distinctive style were highly regarded both domestically and internationally during his lifetime. As a Kano school painter, he received numerous commissions from shrines and temples, and was also widely popular among the general public. He attracted international attention, with many critical essays written about him abroad. Against this backdrop of broad activity, Kyosai left behind a vast array of diverse works, including landscapes, caricatures, Buddhist paintings, and animal paintings.
This auction will feature 14 diverse works that illustrate his rich expression, showcasing Kawanabe Kyosai's inexhaustible creativity and multifaceted charm.
